In May of 2023, our 34-year-old son died due to an accidental overdose. Even though I am a therapist, dealing with death and dealing with grief brings such a flood of emotions, I could barely breathe. I lost both parents in their 80s, and a 20-year-old brother years ago, but there is no comparison to losing a child, regardless of their age. I realized life continued to go on for those around me, but my world stood still.
Nine months after my son died, I found David Kessler’s Grief Educator Certification program. David is a world-renown grief educator and book author. I read his book entitled Finding Meaning and discovered he lost a 21-year-son due to a drug overdose. I recognized David survived the grief of losing his son, so maybe there was hope for me. I signed up for the program in hope of “finding meaning” in my own life. and it worked.
